Some drive manufacturers (Seagate, Maxtor (now one company?) have free programs specifically to check their hard drives - actually I think Seagate's will check other brands too with some sort of limitation which I don't quite recall.

Course maybe they're all like chkdsk/f, I don't know much about the command line stuff like that one.

Certainly don't trust a drive that was doing a lot of clicking because it ain't anymore.

(I'm fiddling around with backing up my own drive (1TB Seagate), which I have never before done in the 20-some years I've been messing around with computers. Been using this Dell machine/drive (Seagate) for 3 years now, and while I have some much older drives that still work, I am beginning to worry about losing things that are important to me, like my starship creations and all the ones I've collected from others over the years.)

(Make that 30-some years, but I have no recollection of what was in my Atari 800 with regards to hard drives...)

Yes get it checked out. It could be a bad sector which isn't being accessed now that the files have been removed but there could still be problems.

Yes the chkdsk/f option, or anything else you have to hand. If that doesn't work, a professional.

Both.  Maybe it's something as little as a bad sector, to a virus
